"The traveler was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes "sight-seeing."
—Daniel J. Boorstin
While it seems (to me) that I'm just returning from travel, I'm also preparing for more travel in the fall. Cortona in September and Portland Art & Soul in October. (Also the 3-Day in October . . . why do I schedule my activities in bursts??)

I made this journal from a composition notebook to document my fall journeys. I used color and texture techniques I learned from Michael deMeng and Leighanna Light, I used the repurposed composition book idea I [stole] from Kim Kwan and Sarah Whitmire.

  1. How on earth did you transform a comp book into this piece of art? I have good things to look forward to if Michael can teach me how to do this in Portland as well. Your work is amazing Leslie!

  2. ooooohhh... You are talented beyond words! I love it! The colors, textures, and composition are amazing, Leslie.

  3. it is very pretty! so cortona in sept. huh? that will be so much fun. pack me in your suitcase. that's great you finished your morpheus box. i'm currently working on something i started at artfest - so it feels good to be doing stuff with it, instead of it just sitting and waiting for me. how do you get your photos so large on your blog? they are beautiful pictures.

  4. Leslie this is lovely - I want to hold it...

  5. Hi Leslie....Talk about books....yours looks great. and you're way ahead of me , already getting one ready for the trip. I better get going. I didn't realize till I saw your name on the e-mail from Stacey you were going to Cortona. Yeah!! Didn't you just love Michael's class? Now you're hooked. So glad you'll be in Italy with us!

  6. Very beautiful and natural/earthy book and work of art Leslie! It's great that you have Art and soul and Corona ! Don't you like to have fun things in your future to look forward to? I really do like your quotes here on your side bar. I just got lost in them. ALSO. LOVE your banner!

    Happy Sunday!

  7. WOW nice Leslie! Are you using txtured papers under it all? I see you've escaped sniffing baby necks and gone into some amazing projects here. PS:love that crop of pointed baby hair on the last baby photos. Do I pick up on precious remarkable items or what? Can I pluck at it gently, with mousse?

  8. Dear Stiffie:

While it is all very good to dwell on the merits of travel, there is no sadder place than the "Departing Flights" ramp at Philadelphia International. Tour guides routinely point out my tear stains on the concrete, where I am left as you grab your bags and run for another flight. I'm told the cement has softened there and stargazer lilies now bloom in the moonlight.

I am amazed at the transformation that occurs with regular household items around here. This afternoon there were three notebooks on the counter. Tonight, they have been replace by exquisitely covered journals that look like the kind of thing one would find on a shelf at the Vatican.

I would like to have one, but the pressures of ownership would be enormous. For one thing, to use as a travel journal, I'd have to go someplace where the sunsets glowed like hot coals and where the moon would encourage dialogue like one finds in a Midsummer's Night Dream.

Then I'd have to record it all in a profound way that discouraged exaggeration. Still, I intent to acquire one of these.

    With admiration and passion,
    AKA The Lindbergh Baby

  9. What incredible color and texture!! Hard to believe it started life as a lowly comp book! Have a wonderful holiday weekend - Deb

  10. That book is awesome - I just love the colors and texture!!!!
You blow me away with your work.

    take care,

  11. The texture in this book is a knockout! And the book will be even better once it is filled with your adventures. Hope you post again when it is complete.

  12. PS:If Jack isn't too busy I would sure like to travel with a man that romantic, for a change. Can I borrow him/

  13. Leslie, this journal is just delicious. As is Jack's comment about owning one. Lucky you. I'm glad you enjoyed my Vintage Porn post, I may have to name one of the new guys "Jack".
